Something to Brag About

2 Mins read

It is the beginning of a new month, precisely the first day of the last month in the year. And I am beginning to question if I actually have something to brag about this year.

Let not the wise boast of their wisdom, or the strong boast of their strength, or the rich boast of their riches.

Jeremiah 9:23

Boasting starts out strong, but in the end, it always fades away. I know how much I had boasted of what I will achieve this year. I had trusted and bragged about what was going on well in all areas of my life, yes, not quite literarily. But my smiles was more radiant and I showed more confidence outwardly. My ability to make the right decisions was not in doubt and the health of everyone around me was in perfect condition.

Jeremiah lists three areas where this is evident: “wisdom … strength … riches.” And the wise counsel is good for any one to follow, “But let the one who boasts, boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord” (v.24)

When things are going great, it is very easy to have a sweet good feeling inside. One that makes it easy to pump out the chest and say, I have faith, I trust and love the Lord, and possibly if not probably, I am in right standing with God.

But what happens when there is a little leak or shaking? That time when someone is critically sick in the family, or there is a job loss and family income is threatened. Or a time when you are facing mounting debts, opposition at work, at home and everything seems on fire. Maybe, it is even that the numbers are just not adding up in business.

Maintaining My Quietness and Hope

Many people may have had a tougher time than I did this year, and so I will practice more gratitude. I will be thankful for what I have and not grumble for what I don’t. If indeed I believe that He has provided everything that I need for life and Godliness, then I should live like someone who truly has it that way.

Or do I really believe?

When I face seemingly hopeless situations, how have I responded?

If God is for us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:31

I really believe I have what I need to finish this year well. And not just this year, the many years beyond. God’s love does not imply that bad things won’t happen to the good guy. Apostle Paul listed seven seemingly unbearable situations that he himself faced: trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and the sword. But like Paul, “in all things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” Romans 8: 37.

Through the uncertainty of this world, there is something and someone to brag about. God can be trusted completely, knowing that nothing, absolutely nothing, “will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8: 39).

Sometimes, in the midst of the chaos, we lose sight of the things that really matter.
