If you are like others in the workplace, polluting the atmosphere, pushing unfair and discriminatory behaviors and policies, but confess a faith that says you are the salt and the light world; and that you should be positively different, then you are like a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal (1 Corinthians 13:1). You won’t have something to brag about when the accuser of the brethren comes piling up your ‘sins’ of omission. Yes, that one who accuses us before our God day and night (Revelation 12:10). And I bet, many ‘sins’ that were willfully commissioned may also surface. I will therefore humbly give counsel; you need to become a workplace bias busting agent instead.
To become an effective workplace bias busting agent or workman that doesn’t need to be ashamed, you cannot isolate yourself.
Have You Ever Heard of a Biased Lamp in a Dark Room?
13 You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
14 You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.
16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.Matthew 5: 13 – 16
Have You Ever Heard of a Biased Salt in a Container Filled With Water?
If you add salt to a meal that you are cooking, it will be concentrated on the side where it is applied if the whole content is not stirred for the salt to mix. It will be strange for salt to choose to sweeten a part of the meal after it is well blended with the entire content of the pot or container.
The same goes for light in a dark room. But one thing is different when you compare light and the salt, light acts independently to permeate every area of its reach. But for salt, you need to make an effort for it to reach every part of the container where the rest of the materials you are mixing it with, is.
To become an effective workplace bias busting agent or workman that doesn’t need to be ashamed, you cannot isolate yourself. Make it less of the Words spoken but the Words lived out.
How to Bust Bias at Work: WorkLife with Adam Grant
During his Tuesday, May 18, 2021 podcast with the TED Audio Collective, Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist dwelled on an email that Tyece Wilkins, a diversity and inclusion senior advisor at BAE Systems wrote; BAE is a aerospace and defense company.
According to Adam, Tyece’s email created a watershed moment at her company. It started real progress in the fight against bias at her workplace, BAE; simply because she acted as someone who is a workplace bias busting agent.
Before we go into the subsequent parts in this series in the coming days, I will like you to consider what you can do right now, to be a light and a salt. What can you do and what steps can you take to become a workplace bias busting agent? Now think, and act with wisdom, salt or light in a wrong meal or place, or at the wrong time and quantity can be a disaster.
It is far easier to add salt gradually to sweeten your meal; than to try and take out an excess of it.
Sometimes, in the midst of the chaos, we lose sight of the things that really matter.Carta CPO, Suzy Walther/(www.hrdive.com)
