European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) Gender Equality Index (GEI) shows the advances in gender equality. The Index uses a scale of 1 to 100, where 1 is for total inequality and 100 is for total equality.

The Gender Equality Index is a composite indicator that measures the complex concept of gender equality. This report is for performance by European Union countries. The GEI is therefore based on the EU policy framework, and assists in monitoring progress of gender equality across the EU over time.

Each year, EU Member States and the EU as a whole are scored to see how far they are from reaching gender equality.

Gender Equality Index

The European Union has been moving towards gender equality at a snail’s pace. With a Gender Equality Index score of 67.4 out of 100, the EU still has a lot of room for improvement.

Since 2005, the EU’s score has increased by only 5.4 points (+ 1.2 points since 2015)

The Gender Equality Index Score

The scores are based on the gaps between women and men and levels of achievement in six core domains: work, money, knowledge, time, power and health.

Two additional domains are integrated into the Index but do not have an impact on the final score.

  • The domain of intersecting inequalities highlights how gender inequalities manifest in combination with age, dis/ability, country of birth, education and family type.
  • The domain of violence against women measures and analyses women’s experiences of violence.

Advances in gender equality are still moving at a snail’s pace. Countries that have started measuring and scoring themselves are heading in the right direction.

There are big improvements in the domain of power. More women are taking on decision-making positions, especially in company boardrooms across Europe.

In addition to providing a snapshot into the Index scores, the Gender Equality Index 2019 includes a thematic focus on work-life balance.

Snippets: Although people may think that money improves one’s relationships, research suggests otherwise. Focusing on money is associated with spending less time maintaining relationships and less desire to rely on others for help. But why does focusing on money relate to worse social outcomes?

We propose that when people base their self-esteem on financial success—that is, have financially contingent self-worth—they are likely to feel pressured to pursue success in this domain. Which may come at the expense of spending time with close others.

Basing one’s self-worth on financial success is associated with greater feelings of loneliness and social disconnection. And this may be related to experiencing less autonomy and spending less time with family and friends. So, you cannot buy me love, time spent together is priceless.

Snippet: Those who focus their lives on accumulating wealth are more likely to end up lonely — as they sacrifice social time with loved ones in order to work — a study has found. Experts from the US explored why basing one’s self-esteem around financial success — the so-called ‘Financial Contingency of Self-Worth’ — can have drawbacks.

According to the team, pursuit of money in itself is not inherently problematic, but the impact such has on much-needed social connections can be. ‘When people base their self-worth on financial success, they experience feelings of pressure and a lack of autonomy,’ said paper author and psychologist Lora Park of the University of Buffalo.

The findings, they added, emphasise the importance of maintaining social networks and personal relationships — alongside other goals — for one’s mental health.

Work-Life Balance have one more definition. It can be defined as, “the way we impact-fully utilize and productively manage, balance and integrate our wealth (financial, health, work opportunity, status, privileges, relationships, accomplishments, taste, etc), and our life.” This definition gives a different perspective of work-life balance. It shows our relationship with wealth, and how as billionaires, the middle class and low income earners we can go broke or be forced to declare bankruptcy.

When we think of bankruptcy, we often think of celebrities who have gone brokecompanies that failed and crooks who are trying to cheat the system. But as it turns out, bankruptcy is likely most common among middle-class Americans.

Same Boat For The Low Income, The Middle Class And Billionaires

In 2018, Marketplace asked Sen. Elizabeth Warren, “what is something that you thought you knew and you later found out you were wrong about?

Sen. Warren responded, that, “many, many years ago when I first started studying families in bankruptcy I thought I knew who filed for bankruptcy. I had come from a family that had been turned upside down financially but my family had never filed for bankruptcy. So I figured, you know, the people who actually go into bankruptcy, they are probably trying to cheat the system, take advantage.”

However after taking a closer look, the senator said she realized she was “very, very wrong.”

“People who filed for bankruptcy were by and large hard-working middle-class families. Folks who had worked hard, gone to college, gotten married, bought a house, and had kids. But then had just been turned upside down by a serious medical problem, a job loss, a death or divorce in the family,” she added.

Taking a list from Business Insider, let us do a quick run down of some in these category in 2015. They are rapper 50 Cent, Marvin Gaye, Kim Basinger, Meat Loaf and Cyndi Lauper. Others are rapper MC Hammer, Francis Ford Coppola, former MLB pitcher Curt Schilling, Larry King, and Mike Tyson.

The tricky financial situation that high-profile people found themselves can happen to anyone. Many factors contributed to wealthy people losing it all. It could be as a result of economic downturns, bad investments, and even massive fraud cases that landed them in hot water. Others are alimony payments, addictions, backing out of a deal, breach of contract, debt to tax authorities, or frivolous spending.

There are stories of individuals who went from rags to riches. Some others who went from riches-to-rags. And there is also a unique group, those who came from rags to riches, went from riches to rags, and then back to riches from rags.

Some of the most well-known billionaires have declared bankruptcy at some point in their lives, either personally or on their companies. Other wealthy billionaires have claimed to be completely broke.

Some of the billionaires reviewed here who might had gone broke or declared bankruptcy have returned to prominence and are just as rich as they once were. However, others failed to regain much, if any, of the wealth they once had.

Patricia Kluge was a former heiress and model. Kluge met her second husband, John W. Kluge, on a trip to New York City. Nine years later, the couple divorced. She invested a great deal of her divorce-settlement money into her vineyard, and lived the epitome of high-society life before losing it all during the housing-market crisis of 2008. 

Kluge held an auction of all her fine jewelry and other spoils of wealth to try and save herself from bankruptcy. It didn’t work, and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in June 2011. Source: Business Insider.

Vijay Mallya was India’s airline and liquor billionaire, known for his extravagant partying and high-flying lifestyle. He owned the now-defunct Indian airline company, Kingfisher Airlines. Beginning in 2012, Mallya had racked up numerous debts to banks in trying to keep his airline business afloat. 

When he defaulted on payments, the Indian banks he had borrowed money from came looking for him. He fled from India to the UK and he is now in the process of being extradited to India to be charged with fraud and money laundering. Source: Business Insider

Sean Quinn was once the richest man in Ireland. He acquired a great deal of success through investments in industries such as plastic, glass, and hotels. He held a 25% stake in Anglo Irish Bank, but was bailed out by taxpayers during the 2008 financial crisis.

As a result of bad investments in an Irish bank, Quinn was forced to hand over most of his $2.8 billion fortune. In November 2011, Quinn claimed his assets to be less than £50,000 when he applied for bankruptcy. Source: Business Insider

Jocelyn Wildenstein, was rumored to spend monthly, $1 million on lavish purchases and $5,000 on her phone bill. The New York Post reported she filed that her monthly income was $0, survived on $900 Social Security payments and assistance from her friends and family. 

Despite $2.5 billion she received in the divorce, she said her financial troubles are from a faulty divorce settlement. That she was promised much more. In May 2018, the socialite and former wife of the late billionaire art dealer Alec Wildenstein filed for federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Source: Business Insider

Bernard “Bernie” Madoff holds the infamous title of leader of the largest Ponzi scheme in US history. He had served as the chairman of the Nasdaq, and flew under the radar for decades before his demise in December 2008. Before the scandal, he and his wife had a personal net worth between $823 million and $826 million.

His investors’ losses accumulated to about $65 billion. In 2008, Madoff was charged with 11 counts of fraud, money laundering, perjury, and theft. Now he’s broke and received a maximum sentence of 150 years in federal prison. Source: Business Insider

Elizabeth Holmes was once a Silicon Valley star with a net worth of $5 billion. Her blood-testing company, Theranos, was valued at $9 billion. By the end of 2004, the company had raised roughly $6 million from private investors. In 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) concluded Theranos’ testing might pose a safety risk to patients.

After multiple lawsuits, layoffs, and a federal allegation, Theranos closed its doors in September 2018, narrowly avoiding bankruptcy. Holmes then forfeited control of Theranos and paid $500,000 to settle charges by the SEC. Forbes lists Holmes’ personal net worth at $0. Source: Business Insider

Björgólfur Gudmundsson was once the second-richest man in Iceland. He made his fortune in the brewing industry, served as owner of UK football team West Ham and a major stakeholder in the Icelandic bank Landsbanki. After the bank went under in October 2008, Forbes revised Gudmundsson’s net worth from $1.2 billion to $0 when he declared bankruptcy.

Gudmundsson and his son, Björgólfur “Thor” Gudmundsson, were both major shareholders in Landsbanki. “Thor” Gudmundsson has since gained back a great deal of his wealth, in what Forbes referred to as a “crazy comeback.” Source: Business Insider

Eike Batista was once Brazil’s richest man. In 2012, he was worth an estimated $30 billion, making him the seventh-richest man in the world. He lost a majority of his wealth when his oil company, OGX failed to meet demands, and Brazil’s economy slid into a decline. He filed for bankruptcy in 2013. In July 2018, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for bribing former Rio de Janeiro Gov. Sergio Cabral.

On March 24, 2020, it was announced that Batista had struck a deal with Brazilian authorities and will serve four years in prison, pay back $160 million, and collaborate with prosecutors. According to BN Americas, a court still needs to validate the deal. Source: Business Insider

Allen Stanford travails began after a Texas fitness club he owned went bankrupt. He turned to offshore banking and operated a scheme were retirees were promised “safe investments,” according to CNBC. The scheme culminated in $7 billion in losses for investors. 

When the Securities and Exchange Commission raided Stanford Financial Group’s Houston headquarters on February 17, 2009, they charged the magnate and his associates with running a “massive, ongoing fraud,” CNBC reported. Stanford was convicted in 2012 and is serving a 110-year sentence in Florida, CNBC reported. His net worth is now listed at $0Source: Business Insider

Ellen Degeneres Addresses ‘Toxic Work Environment’


Ellen DeGeneres came out to start Season 18 of her show addressing the accusations of a toxic work environment. She had earlier offered staff some perks in the wake of the ‘toxic workplace claim.’ Ellen DeGeneres addresses the rumors of workplace toxicity, and about her personal behavior.

In her monologue, DeGeneres, took responsibility for the scandal.

“As you may have heard, this summer there were allegations of a toxic work environment at our show. And then there was an investigation. I learned that things happened here that never should have happened.” Ellen began.

DeGeneres continued: “I take that very seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected. I know that I’m in a position of privilege and power and I realized that with that comes responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.”

In the latest episode of her podcast, former First Lady Michelle Obama recounts her time in the workplace and why having women in leadership roles is so important.

Michelle Obama Talks About Life Switching Roles And Positive Impact To Leave Along

Wednesday’s episode between Obama, 56, and her former boss Valerie Jarrett, was a conversation that centers largely on work-life balance. Valerie went on to be a senior White House adviser.

Obama said that working with Jarrett, 63, served as a “important education.” This was not just because of the way Jarrett could command a room, but because of the effort she put in to taking time out for her daughter, Laura.

“Seeing some other female leaders making an effort to balance work and family life, makes others more productive. It gives a feel like, not just work had values, but our lives had value”

Remembering her time spent working under Jarrett (then deputy chief of staff for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley), the former first lady said to Jarrett on The Michelle Obama Podcast: “If Laura called, everything stopped … And you wouldn’t rush her. You know, you would answer her little 5-year-old questions. And then you would say, ‘Mommy will be home.’ Then you’d turn back around without skippin’ a beat, and be right back in it, and I thought — baller! Baller.”

Seeing Jarrett and some of the other female leaders making an effort to balance work and family life, Obama said, “made us all more productive, and feel like not just our work had values but our lives had value.”

Michelle Obama’s Work Application Interview Performance Amidst Life Crossroads

In their chat for The Michelle Obama Podcast, the two also detailed their first meeting. This was when Jarrett interviewed Obama for a role at the Chicago mayor’s office in the early 1990s.

The two had similar backgrounds, having both come to the public sector after working for law firms.

“I have to tell you Michelle, I can still remember you walking into my office, and you were so, you know, composed and confident,” Jarrett said. “And what did you do? You told me your story, which is unusual for people to do in an interview.”

“Failure is all part of life. I never want young people to think that failure isn’t a part of everybody’s journey”

That story was about Obama finding herself at a crossroads. She had lost both her father and one of her close friends within a year and had determined that she wanted to pursue a new path. According to Jarrett, the interview left her so impressed that she offered Obama a job on the spot, even without having “any authority” to do so.

After leaving Chicago politics, Jarrett went on to work as an adviser to President Barack Obama, serving in his administration from 2009 until 2017.

An Important Pathway Before Landing A Leadership Role

On Wednesday’s podcast, Mrs. Obama also shared stories about her conversations with her own daughters — specifically, 22-year-old Malia, now finishing college. She talked about the importance of paying your dues when it comes to landing a leadership role.

“I tried to make the point to Malia that the young people … who are my mentees, I reminded her that they started out, several of them, in the campaign, doing some of the grunt-iest jobs,” Mrs. Obama said.

“We are living, breathing role models – not just in what we say, but what we do”

Many of those who once volunteered for the campaign, or did entry-level work, she said, are now working alongside the Obamas.

“But the people who are with me now, and who now have responsibilities over my schedule, or they’ve helped run a big book tour, or they are running, our higher ground productions and working with Netflix, almost all those people started out doing some grunt work,” she said, laughing.

Michelle Obama Talks About Failure As A Part Of Everybody’s Journey

Equally important to working ones way up the ladder, Obama added, is learning that failure is all part of life.

“I never want young people to think that failure isn’t a part of everybody’s journey,” she said, noting that she failed the bar exam the first time she sat for the test.

“What does it do for me if … some kid thinks I’ve never had a failure. That, that’s the only way you can be first lady, is if you’re perfect? No one is,” she said.

“Strong men – men who are truly role models – don’t need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful.”

Elsewhere in the episode, she and Jarrett spoke about the need to use their platforms to encourage others.

“We are living, breathing role models — not just in what we say, but what we do,” said the former first lady. She added later in the conversation that those with large platforms are “setting the tone for people behind us” and should always be aware of how their words and behaviors might be perceived.

The words echoed Mrs. Obama’s past remarks about role models.

In a 2016 speech while campaigning for Hilary Clinton, she offered a damning review of then-candidate Donald Trump‘s remarks about women. She said, “Strong men — men who are truly role models — don’t need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful.”

With the passing of the iconic Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, many Americans have poured encomiums on her. Some wants her memory to be a blessing, others have formed an RBG hashtag revolution. The hashtag followers are promising to fight every day, as did #RBG to achieve #EqualityForAll.

RBG (Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg) was until recently, the United States Supreme Court Justice. She is acclaimed to have lived an amazing life, impacting the lives of others before she died at 87, September 2020. She was appointed in 1993 by President Bill Clinton.

People were drawn to her for different reasons. For some, it is how she consistently delivered progressive votes on the most divisive social issues of the day. Four years ago, Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote an article in the New York Times in which she offered her advice for living.

In the article, she says: “Another often-asked question when I speak in public: “Do you have some good advice you might share with us?” Yes, I do. It comes from my savvy mother-in-law, advice she gave me on my wedding day.

“In every good marriage,” she counseled, “it helps sometimes to be a little deaf. I have followed that advice assiduously, and not only at home through 56 years of a marital partnership nonpareil. I have employed it as well in every workplace, including the Supreme Court. When a thoughtless or unkind word is spoken, best tune out. Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance one’s ability to persuade.”

Research has also shown that people who do well at forgiving others (i.e. letting go of their anger and resentment) typically experience fewer negative physical health symptoms, like disorders of the cardiovascular or immune system.

Being able to tune out the thoughtless words you’re guaranteed to hear, isn’t just important to keep yourself psychologically healthy, it’s also a necessary ingredient for resilience. That is, one’s ability to bounce back quickly from failure, adversity, stress, etc.

So I will take that fact (which is quite useful) and focus on it to the exclusion of the unkind words. By staying factual, we stay calmer. We’re then better to discern the one or two nuggets that are often contained within even the most thoughtless and unkind comments.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg led a remarkable life. And while we might not equal her legendary career heights, we can all apply her advice. We can be a little deaf to thoughtless and unkind words. As she notes, “Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance one’s ability to persuade.”
